The relationship between functional mobility and rowing ergometer performance in junior rowers (CROSBI ID 926574) übersetzter Titel (DE)

Functional mobility is often emphasized in athlete development for its role in injury prevention and movement efficiency. However, its direct relationship to sport-specific performance, particularly in symmetrical endurance sports like rowing, remains underexplored in adolescent populations. This study aimed to evaluate the association between functional mobility and rowing performance over 2000-meter and 6000-meter ergometer tests in Junior B category rowers aged 15-16 years. Seventeen competitive youth rowers (11 males, 6 females) completed both 2k and 6k maximal effort tests on a Concept2 rowing ergometer. A comprehensive battery of 13 mobility and stability tests was administered, including standard Functional Movement Screen (FMS) items and additional assessments (e.g., Sorensen test, dorsiflexion wall test, Q/H force ratio). Each test was scored from 1 (poor) to 3 (good), and a total mobility score was calculated. Descriptive statistics and non-parametric Spearman`s rank correlations were computed to assess relationships between mobility scores and rowing performance. No statistically significant correlations were observed between total mobility scores and rowing times for either 2k (rho = 0.003) or 6k (? = -0.089). While some individual tests, such as shoulder reach (2k: rho = 0.410; 6k: rho = 0.492), showed moderate positive trends, these did not reach significance. Several tests showed weak or negative associations with performance. The findings suggest that in adolescent rowers, functional mobility, as measured through a general screening battery, does not strongly predict rowing ergometer performance. These results support a more nuanced view of athletic development, emphasizing aerobic and technical factors over isolated mobility measures in this age group. Future studies should examine longitudinal development, asymmetries, and biomechanical variables to better understand the role of mobility in rowing performance
